Hon. Alimamy Brun Kanu of the All People’s Congress (APC), a former Member of Parliament representing Constituency 072 in Masiaka, in Koya Chiefdom in northern Sierra Leone, is reported to have fled Sierra Leone fearing that he would be accused of sponsoring and taking part in the Masiaka riot.
Hell was let loose on Masiaka, a town lying about 50 miles from the capital Freetown, when a spontaneous fight broke out following the announcement of the 24 June 2023 General Elections results.
Independent reports gathered by this medium indicate that an unsuspecting and unplanned riot that led to the death of one person, the destruction of property, the sustaining of severe injuries by many people and the arrests of a number of people took place on 26 June 2023 between mostly youth of Masiaka and a group of supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
Following the arrests of some youths in Masiaka, Hon. Alimamy Brun Kanu reportedly went underground; fearing that he too would be arrested for sponsoring and taking part in the riot.
It could be recalled that Honourable Kanu is the immediate former Member of Parliament for Constituency 072. He was reported to have been in Masiaka at the time of the riot but never took any part in it.
Some of his family members have intimated this medium that they suspected that he might have fled the country already but his whereabouts are still unknown.
Hon. Kanu is one of the opposition MPs who were giving the ruling SLPP tough time in parliament by challenging issues which had to do with the people’s welfare and fundamental human rights which put him in the bad books of the SLPP. This was manifested a number of times by supporters of the SLPP anytime they had serious debate in the well of parliament.
