The National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programs (UNEP), ECOWAS, and the Government of Sierra Leone, yesterday (4 August 2026) ended a two-day workshop on “Cleaner Fuels and Vehicles” at the Atlantic Hotel, Lumley, in Freetown.
The workshop brought together delegates from UNEP, ECOWAS, Ministries, Departments and Agencies, Industry actors, media and Civil Society Organizations.
Pollution from vehicle emissions and high level sulphur content on fuel is one of the most pressing environmental and public health challenges facing the world and the ECOWAS region.
According to the Director General of NPRA, Baluwa Koroma, “We are particularly excited to receive potentially, this breath of representation and participation of a collective multi-sectorial engagement can produce meaningful and lasting reforms to achieve the landmark directives by ECOWAS and UNEP”.
Mr Koroma noted that, “As Regulators, NPRA was proactive to have subscribed to Platts in 2020 imposing 10ppm for petroleum products, this policy preparedness will make the transition seamless in the region”.
Climate issues have no sovereignty as they are universal and the implementation of ECOWAS Cleaner Fuel and Vehicle standards will inevitably promote Cleaner Transportation Environmental Protection and Regional Energy Security.
