Alimamy Turay of SAT Logistics Company is alleged to have received money by false pretense from a Canadian company, known as GLOBEX, to the tune of seventy-five thousand United States’ dollars (US$75,000) on the pretext that his company had a consignment of gold valued at that amount.

But since March 2024, he is yet to produce the said consignment of gold while at the same time his whereabouts remain unknown. Investigations suggest that he may be currently hiding in the southern parts of Sierra Leone.

Investigations carried out by The Nationalist newspaper indicate that after Alimamy Turay received the US$75,000 through SAT Logistics Company’s accounts, he later informed the Canadian company, GLOBEX, that they needed an additional Le48 million (Old Leones) for one of his staff who had a valid Canadian visa, John Samawa, to travel with the gold to Canada through neighbouring Guinea. He reportedly claimed that the said additional money was meant for road and travel expenses.

The Canadian company, GLOBEX, insisted that Alimamy Turay’s supposed courier, John Samawa, flew from Sierra Leone with the gold not from Guinea. But he said he knew what he was doing as it would be easy for the gold to be flown from Guinea than from Sierra Leone.

Based on that, the Canadian company sent an additional six thousand United States’ dollars (US$6,000) to cover air tickets and other expenses. Documents in our possession suggest that most of the payments went to Alimamy Turay’s SAT Logistics Company’s account, and small amounts were also received directly by John Samawa for road and travel expenses.

Later, after few days of silence, Alimamy Turay reportedly told the Canadian company that John “screwed” him and took the consignment of gold for himself instead of delivering it.

During the course of our investigations, we called Alimamy Turay on his cellphone more than a dozen times. On the first two calls, he promised to give us his own side of the story. But after that, he kept on dodging us even yesterday as of the time of going to press.

We will continue with our investigations on this story.
